Chief guest Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that illiteracy, corruption, communalism, unemployment, linguistic disputes, irregularities, population, low attendance in parliament and assemblies, increasing election expenses, falling level of politics, etc. were considered as serious challenges of democracy.
Bhiwani, 5th December. A social lecture on the topic of current challenges of Indian democracy was organized by the Cultural Forum. Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was present in the lecture as the chief guest. The keynote address was eminent journalist Rahul Dev. Shivratna Gupta, president of Vaish Mahavidyalaya Trust presided. Dr. D.V. Dhillon was present as the special guest. The subject change was done by Rajesh Chetan, President of Bhiwani Parivar Maitri Sangh, Delhi.
Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma, Vice Chairman of BRCM Bahl was the welcome speaker. The president of the organization, Ranvijay Singh told that Anita Nath conducted the stage in the program. Surendra Kumar Sharma described free politics as a challenge to democracy. Dr. DV Dhillon considered corruption as a challenge and international poet Rajesh Chetan considered the lack of participation in voting a challenge.
Journalist Rahul Dev considered the abolition of fraternity as the main challenge of democracy. Emphasizing on the imperative of opposition for democracy, he expressed concern over the lack of debate and its deteriorating level in the Parliament and the Legislative Assemblies. He expressed his views extensively on the rise of the dividing lines of caste and religion in the society, journalism and freedom of expression, familyism, individual-centred politics. He also considered the misuse of technology and the threat of privacy as a challenge. Emphasizing on fraternity, he said that fraternity is the solution to most of the problems.
Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda started his address by remembering the contribution of freedom fighters and constitution makers in achieving independence. He considered freedom of thought as essential to democracy. Describing the rise of regional parties as a challenge to democracy, he highlighted the importance of national parties. He discussed the democratic structure of India citing the example of ancient Indian republics.
