Made a new beginning in the prison for the improvement and welfare of prisoners: Director General of Jail K.K. Selvaraj

Panchkula-26, April- With an overall vision of improvement and reformation of inmates, Sh. K. Selvaraj, Director General of Prisons, Haryana initiated a new programme – ‘Transforming Jails into Schools– A Step towards Life’ in association with the Public Health Empowerment and Research Organization (NGO), New Delhi in which a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which has been duly approved by the Government was signed by the DG Prisons, Haryana and Dr. Vinit Bhargava, CEO, Public Health Empowerment and Research Organization and witnessed by Sh. Jagjit Singh, IG Prisons, Haryana.

This programme aims to reintegrate the inmates to basic values of health and human relations. In addition, the programme will help in reducing the stress and negative emotions among the prisoners by optimally utilizing their spare time and involving them in recreational activities in accordance with their interest which in turn will promote a harmonious environment in prisons and better mental health of prisoners. This programme is based on the premise that every person has some qualities that are useful for the society.

So, this programme will also help in highlighting those useful qualities in them. This programme will be run completely by the inmates themselves under the guidance of Jail administration and Public Health Empowerment and Research Organization. No additional resources will be required for this programme. This programme will be completely free of cost, self-operated and self-sustainable.

Just like schools, this programme will provide prison its own curriculum and daily routine which has been prepared by Dr. Vinit Bhargava and his team. In accordance with the need, this curriculum is broadly divided into 5 parts – Socio-moral Values, Health and Hygiene,

Yogic exercises, Motivational Stories, Complaints and suggestions. This will be the first written and explicit course of its kind designed especially for the jails. All Superintendents Jail in Haryana joined the launching of the programme through video conferencing.
